February 1st, 2014 can not be forgotten in a hurry not only by the followers of this renowned Islamic scholar but all Abusites and lovers of truth across the world. It was a day of tears, grief, and mourning following the demise of Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albaniy Zaria.

The Zaria-based world-class Islamic scholar and distinguished Abusite was assassinated alongside his son and one of his four wives, by gunmen on his way back home from his permanently fixed weekend Islamic circle where he teaches Saheehul Bukhaariy.

The death of Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albaniy Zaria remains a big loss to Zaria and Nigeria in entirety as the late Shaikh was a teacher, peace promoter, employer to many, human rights campaigner, philanthropist and to approximate it all, a serious Islamic Reformer.

Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albaniy Zaria was born on 6th Rabuinith Thani, 1379 equivalent to 27th September, 1960 in Muchia, Sabon Gari, Zaria, Kaduna state, Nigeria to the family of Alhaji Adamu Musa and Hajia Saudatu.

It was the desire of his mother that he becomes a cleric and as such he abandoned his desire of becoming a journalist. Sheikh Albaniy started his educational career in a missionary school in Sabon Gari, Zaria and attended government commercial secondary school, Barewa college, and Demonstration secondary school all in Zaria.

He proceeded to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria from 1992 to 1994 where he obtained a Diploma in Shari’a Law with Distinction. He also obtained a Diploma in Hausa Language from BUK, and a Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Jos.

He attended the Federal University of Technology Yola, from 2002 to 2007 where he graduated with a Second Class Degree Honors (Upper Division) in Information and Communications Technology.

He was a Postgraduate student at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria when he was killed on February 1st, 2014.

Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albaniy Zaria was a certified A+ / A plus professional, Certified N+ / N plus professional, Certified computer networking technician by NIIT, Certified computer repairing and maintenance technician by NIIT, Certified Microsoft Engineer by Microsoft company of America, Computer Scientist, Telecommunications Engineer & Information and communication technologist.

Shaykh Albaniy studied from a number of scholars and clerics at the Islamic University of Madina although not a registered student of the university. He gained admission to the university in 1991/92 but due to the Gulf war as that moment he was unable to pay for his flight ticket and travel to Saudi Arabia to take the offer.

He studied from prominent scholars like Shaykh Salih Bn Salih Bn Uthaimin, Shaykh Zarban Al-Gamidy, Shaykh Muslih Al-Harithiy, Professor Ali Nasir Al-Faqihi of Islamic University of Madina, Sheik Tuwaijiri all in Saudi Arabia.

This is in addition to his enormous study into Islamic Sciences especially Hadith, having spent decades studying hundreds of books of hadith and teaching the same. His vast knowledge and authority in Northern Nigeria led him to adopt the name of “Albani”, after the famous Muhammad Nasiruddin al-Albani.

His students, many of whom are erudite scholars now, are spread all over the country, especially the Northern States and particularly from the states of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Plateau, Bauchi, and other North and Southern Nigeria as well as some Western African countries.

Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Albaniy’s death

Gunmen shot and killed Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albaniy and one of his wives in the city of Zaria on their way back home after attending the usual evening Tafsir lecture in the city. Throughout that Saturday of February 1, Sheikh was teaching and conducting different lessons at his school in Gaskiya layout, Zaria.

In the evening, he delivered his organized lecture at Markazu-Salafiyya, Maje Road in Tudun Wada, Zaria at about 8:15-9:30PM from the Book of Sahihul Bukhari, in the chapter of Hajj. It was after this that he drove himself with one of his wives and some of his children.

The humble Sheikh Albaniy did not like going on convoys and always drove himself. This must have been capitalized on by his assailants as they waylaid him on his way after the lecture at Tudun Wada.

He stopped over at a Central Store along Zaria Gaskiya where he did some shopping and as he got to Magume junction, the killers overtook him. First, they smashed his windscreen and shot his wife. When the Sheikh saw this, he came down and confronted them. He could not just sit back in his car and got killed without making any effort.

They started shooting wildly. Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Albaniy fell. He fell reciting Laila ha illallahu (from Allah we are and to Him we shall certainly return). A prayer he recited continually as he was been rushed to the nearest hospital at Wusasa (Saint Luke’s) by passersby.

Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albaniy was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Luke Hospital in the Wusasa area of Zaria. Boko Haram Leader Abubakar Shekau, Claims Responsibility for the Killing.
